Course Handicap vs Handicap Index

17 June 2026

If you've ever stood on the first tee and wondered why the number on your scorecard doesn't match the figure on your handicap app, you're not alone. The two most commonly confused numbers in golf are your Handicap Index and your Course Handicap — and knowing the difference is essential for fair play.

What is a Handicap Index?

Your Handicap Index is a portable measure of your demonstrated playing ability under the World Handicap System (WHS). It's a single decimal number — for example, 14.2 — calculated from the best 8 of your last 20 score differentials.

Think of it as your "golfing passport": it travels with you to every course in the world, and it doesn't change based on where you're playing.

What is a Course Handicap?

Your Course Handicap is the number of strokes you actually receive at a specific course, from a specific set of tees, on a specific day. It adjusts your Handicap Index to reflect the difficulty of the tees you're playing.

The formula is:

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

  • Slope Rating measures how difficult a course is for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer (standard is 113).
  • Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer.

So a 14.2 Index might become a Course Handicap of 13 off the championship tees and 18 off the forward tees at the same course.

A Visual Example

Notice how the same player with a 14.2 Handicap Index gets a very different number of strokes depending on which tees they choose. The harder the tees (higher Slope and Course Rating), the more strokes the system gives you to keep things fair.

Why the Distinction Matters

  • Handicap Index = your overall ability. Use it to track long-term progress.
  • Course Handicap = strokes you get today. Use it on the scorecard.

If you and a friend tee off from different colours, you'll each have a different Course Handicap even with the same Index. That's the WHS doing its job — levelling the playing field so a casual match or club competition stays competitive.

Quick FAQ

Do I calculate it manually? No. Every course publishes a Course Handicap table near the first tee, and apps like TrackPar calculate it automatically when you log a round.

Does my Index change after every round? Yes — it updates as new scores enter your record and older ones drop out of the rolling 20.

Which one do I tell people? Your Handicap Index is the number you share ("I'm a 14"). Your Course Handicap is the number you play to.
