How does a handicap work in golf?
A golf handicap is a number that represents your playing ability. The lower it is, the better you are. It lets golfers of very different skill levels compete on fair terms.
Why do handicaps exist?
Without handicaps, a beginner would never stand a chance against a seasoned player. The handicap system gives the weaker player a head start — a number of extra strokes — so both players can enjoy a close, competitive round.
How is it calculated?
Your handicap is based on your recent scores. In simple terms:
- You submit your scores after each round.
- The system looks at your best recent rounds.
- It compares your score to the course difficulty (the Course Rating and Slope Rating).
- It works out how many strokes over par you typically play.
- That average becomes your handicap index.
The maximum handicap for men is typically 54, and for women it is also 54 under the World Handicap System.

How does it work in a match?
If your handicap is 18 and your opponent's is 6, you get the difference in strokes: 12 strokes. These are usually spread across the hardest holes on the course, so you get one extra stroke on each of the 12 hardest holes.
That means if you both take 5 shots on a par-4 hole where you receive a stroke, your net score is 4 (5 minus the stroke) — so you halved the hole against the better player.
What is a Course Handicap?
Your Handicap Index is a portable number that travels with you. When you play a specific course, it is adjusted to a Course Handicap based on that course's difficulty. A tough course gives you more strokes; an easy course gives you fewer.
Key things to remember
- Play honestly and enter every round — even the bad ones.
- Only scores played under the rules of golf count.
- Your handicap updates automatically as new scores come in.
- It is designed to reflect your potential, not your average.

Enjoy the game
The handicap is one of golf's greatest inventions. It means a beginner and a pro can play together, have fun, and both feel like they have a chance to win. That is the spirit of the game.
