How to Organise a Weekly Golf Group
Playing golf with the same group of friends every week is one of the best parts of the game. But as the group grows, keeping track of who's playing, scores, handicaps and competitions can quickly become harder than expected.
Whether you have a regular fourball or a much larger group, a little organisation can make weekly golf even more enjoyable.
Keep a Regular Group
Start by establishing a core group of golfers and a regular day to play. It doesn't matter if everyone can't make every week — having a familiar group makes organising rounds much easier.
Many groups use WhatsApp to arrange tee times, but it's worth having somewhere separate to keep your actual golf results and history.
Add Some Friendly Competition
You don't need to run a serious tournament every week.
Formats such as Stableford, Stroke Play, Match Play and Better Ball can add some friendly competition to an ordinary weekend round.
You could also introduce a season-long competition, with points awarded each week to find your group's overall champion.
Keep Track of Everyone's Progress
Part of the fun of regularly playing with the same golfers is seeing how everyone improves.
Keeping previous scores, handicaps and results together makes it easy to see who's playing well — and gives everyone plenty of ammunition for the usual golf-course banter.
Mix Things Up
Playing the same format every week can eventually become repetitive.
Try introducing team competitions, Texas Scrambles, nearest-the-pin challenges or occasional match-play events.
Different formats are particularly useful when your group contains golfers with a wide range of handicaps.
